Oberammergau Passion Play 2020 Countdown Begins!
In the small German village of Oberammergau preparations are already underway for the next Oberammergau Passion Play. Nearly 400 years ago the history of the Oberammergau Passion Play began. Preparations for the shows performance in May, 2020 might seem far off but, the excitement and planning is already building for this exciting production.
As the story goes, in 1633 the Oberammergau villagers promised to perform the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ every tenth year, in turn no one was to die of the black plague anymore. The plague raged in many parts of Europe and did not spare Oberammergau. The villagers prayers were answered by God and therefore in 1634 the first Passion Play took place. It is believed that Passion Play has been held every 10 years since the beginning. This is what made Oberammergau famous. The Passion Play performance follows Christ from his entry into Jerusalem through his Trial, the Last Supper to the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The play ends with the resurrection of Jesus.
To qualify to be in the play you must be a resident of Oberammergau. Over 2000 citizens are involved with the acting, singing, musicians and technical support. The men grow their beards and hair long to make it look authentic to the time. All the beautiful costumes are handmade.
The Oberammergau Passion Play is performed in an open-air stage in this Bavarian town in Germany. A play of life and death, promised in a moment of mortal threat, and so began the history of the Oberammergau Passion Play. The town was spared, and it is amazing that the people of Oberammergau has kept its word and has been honoring this pledge from generation to generation.
Two hours of music is performed by an orchestra of 60 musicians and a choir which elaborates the strongly emotional impact of the Passion Play. The original music for the Passion Play was composed by Rochus Dedler who was born in Oberammergau in 1779. Rochus worked as a composer, a church musician and a teacher up until his death in 1822. Some of the music was influenced by Mozart as well as others throughout the years.
The play is held mid May beginning opening night May 16, 2020 through October 4, 2020. There will be 102 performances. No shows on Monday and Wednesday. Another very interesting fact is that the entire play is performed in German but still people all over the world are so intrigued that this doesn’t stop them. The whole town comes together to perform this well anticipated play and people over 750,000 will attend in 2020. The Passion Play Theater will open and the backdrop of the mountains makes it an unforgettable scene.
